Veteran Film Actress Kamini Kaushal receive Kalpana Chawla Excellence Award

Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh Old Boys Association (PECOBA) is organizing its Tenth Annual Function in memory of its alumnus late astronaut Kalpana Chawla on Wednesday, the 25th Sept, 2013 evening at Epicentre, Gurgaon in which Kalpana Chawla Excellence Awards for Women to outstanding women achievers will be given by Kalpana Chawla’s father Sh Banarsi Lal Chawla.

Amarjit Singh Kohli, founder General Secretary of Pecoba, announced that the awardees of this year include 86 years old veteran film heroine Kamini Kaushal of Mumbai, junior world chess champion Tania Sachdev of Delhi, innovative educationist Minoti Bahri of Gurgaon and Kathak dancer Vidha Lal of Delhi.



Born on 25 February 1927, Kamini Kaushal started her film career as heroine of Chetan Anand’s film  Neecha Nagar (1946) which won the 1946 Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) at Cannes Film Festival. Kamini Kaushal worked with all the top leading men of her time such as Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor and in many films opposite Dalip Kumar including Shaheed (1948), Nadiya Ke Paar (1948), Shabnam (1949) and Arzoo (1950). Biraj Bahu (1955) won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1955

In 1965 she moved to playing character roles with the film Shaheed. As a character artist she was a fixture in seven Manoj Kumar films right up to Dus Numbari in 1976. She stepped into writing children's stories. Her stories used to be published in the children's magazine Paraag. She also directed Doordarshan TV Serial Chand Sitare. Eighty six years old Kamini Kaushal has acted in films continuously for the last 67 years starting with Neecha Nagar (1946), her latest film being Chennai Express (2013) in which she played role of Shahrukh Khan’s grandmother. She has acted in about 100 films till date and continues to be active.

The Function is being organized by PECOBA (Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh Old Boys Association) in conjunction with Cultural Society SAKHA. The Function will be followed by a musical feature depicting the life story of Kalpana Chawla, with live singing entitled “Kalpana Ki Udan, Naari Ka Samman” set to music by Lovely Sharma, scripted and compered by Mamta Vani and produced and directed by Pecoba Gen Secy Amarjit Singh Kohli
